There are few plumbing issues as disconcerting as a bubbling toilet. The sense of dread that hits you when you start hearing those strange noises can be alarming, and if they’re accompanied by bubbles in the bowl, it’s definitely something that needs to be addressed quickly. Toilet bubbling can be a sign of a serious problem, so don’t ever ignore it. In most cases, a bubbling toilet warrants calling a professional plumber as soon as possible. What causes it? It’s typically a clog or blockage somewhere in your plumbing, causing negative air pressure that results in gurgling and bubbling.
- Sometimes, the problem is as simple as a toilet clog. You’ll often be able to tell if this is the problem because you’ll see things floating in the toilet. If this is the case, you may be able to fix it on your own. Use a plunger, plunging it 10 or 15 strong times. This should remedy a blockage that’s close to the surface. If the problem is deeper, it may require the use of a drain snake, sewer snake, or plumber’s auger. It’s probably best to call a plumber to handle this.
- The clog may be in a larger line. If you’re on a municipal sewer line, there may be a clog between your drain and the city’s main sewer drain connection. If you have a septic tank, however, there could be a clog in your septic tank inlet or outlet lines. It could be that your septic tank is too full, and that’s what’s causing the toilet bubbling and gurgling. If so, the next thing that could happen is that sewage will back up into your home. This can also occur when the roots of trees or plants damage the septic tank. In any case, calling in a professional is the best way to address it.
- The vent stack can be another source of blockage. This vertical pipe leading up to your roof regulates the air pressure in your pipes and releases exhaust gas. Water doesn’t flow through these, but they can become blocked by leaves, a bird’s nest, or rodents. You could climb up on the roof and inspect it on your own, but it may be better to go ahead and call for professional help.
